Abstract We present an automatic method for the classii-cation of steel quality based on scale-space operations. The carbide distribution of microscopic specimen images is assessed by classifying according to so-called`degree' and`type' of the specimen. `Degree' is represented by features extracted with automatic scale selection, and`type' information is computed from second-moment descriptors. In combination with a morphological veriication scheme, this pattern classi-er shares large similarities with current manual techniques. Compared to previous work, the new classii-cation scheme has several advantages: The signiicant scale of the carbide agglomeration is calculated explicitly , and the method is less sensitive to the variance of spatial connectivity than a morphological approach.

Improving Chernoff criterion for classification by using the filled function

Linear discriminant analysis is a well-known matrix-based dimensionality reduction method. It is a supervised feature extraction method used in two-class classification problems. However, it is incapable of dealing with data in which classes have unequal covariance matrices. Taking this issue, the Chernoff distance is an appropriate criterion to measure distances between distributions. In the p...

Classification and properties of acyclic discrete phase-type distributions based on geometric and shifted geometric distributions

Acyclic phase-type distributions form a versatile model, serving as approximations to many probability distributions in various circumstances. They exhibit special properties and characteristics that usually make their applications attractive. Compared to acyclic continuous phase-type (ACPH) distributions, acyclic discrete phase-type (ADPH) distributions and their subclasses (ADPH family) have ...
